Adamas has been building such instruments since 1975. Because of the high cost of the material and technology, production has been very limited. But recent carbon fiber manufacturing breakthroughs have changed all that.

Ever play a grand piano with the lid lifted? A similar sonic “openness” is how players describe their first SMT experience.

That’s largely due to the material we use to make the soundboard of the SMT - unidirectional carbon fiber actually have a grain direction, much like a fine piece of spruce.

And while unidirectional carbon fiber shares many of spruce’s favourable acoustic characteristics - lightness, vibrancy - it’s much stronger. A thin slice of fine spruce is comparatively weak. It has to be heavily braced to keep the top from caving in to the stress of the strings. Unfortunately this structural bracing also kills sound. Not so with the SMT. Unidirectional carbon fiber allows us to build an instrument that virtually eliminates the weak notes and dead spots that you’ve come to accept as ‘normal’.
